This listing is for the 1/4” diameter burnisher rod only.

BURNISHER ROD IS 1/4” DIAMETER BY 4” LONG

Conventional wisdom posits that scraper plane blades should be sharpened with a bevel on the cutting edge, reducing the risk of accidentally turning the hook over so far that it no longer bites into the wood. The Accu-Burr® AB2 eliminates this risk by forming a highly predictable and repeatable burr, allowing the use of scraper plane blades that are sharpened at 90 degrees across the edge like any card scraper. The practical advantages of having a second sharpened edge ready for use after the first is dulled should be immediately evident. The AB2 has successfully been tested with the Stanley #80, #12, and #112.

Accu-Burr’s® AB2 burnisher uses the same carbide as the AB1, their original rod, but features a scaled up geometry that works on the extra thick blades that are sold with or for many of the premium scrapers made today (the grooves will only work on blades that are sharpened without a bevel). While the AB1 works on any scraper up to 0.100” (2.5mm), the new AB2 will work on blades up to 5/32” (4mm) thick.

Advantages of the patent pending Accu-Burr™ AB2 include:

  • Forming a precise and repeatable burr simultaneously on both edges of a scraper.

  • Due to the repeatability of the burr achieved with this tool, adjustment to the frog of the scraper plane is no longer necessary every time you sharpen.

  • No deflection of thin card scrapers, or profile scrapers that are necessarily held high above the vise.

  • Will work on any shape, even reaching into concave scraper edges with greater than 1/8" curve radius.

  • Works on any hardness of scraper; we've even tested this successfully on HSS steel blades (approximately RC 65).

  • Works on any thickness scraper, from 0.010" up to 5/32" thick.

  • Ungrooved portion of the rod can be used as a conventional burnisher to draw a burr on a bevel-sharpened blade

For centuries, the common burnisher has remained largely unchanged. A simple rod of hardened steel held in a handle, their use depended largely on the user's freehand skills. Some mounted that rod in a more sophisticated holder to guide the process, but these, too, had distinct disadvantages.

The heart of the patent pending Accu-Burr™ burnisher is a 1/4" diameter carbide rod with three v-shaped grooves around the middle of the rod. These grooves are precision ground to turn a fine, medium, or coarse (5°, 10°, or 15°, respectively) burr simultaneously on both sides of any prepared scraper edge. Because quality and precision matter greatly for the function of this tool, we use a premium American-made grade of carbide, sourced from and ground by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading carbide tooling manufacturer.

How to use: No burnisher gives better results with less effort. To turn a burr, hold your patent pending Accu-Burr™ carbide burnisher PERPENDICULAR to the prepared scraper edge and centered on either the fine, medium, or coarse groove (the deepest groove is for the coarse burr). Using a moderate downward force on the burnisher, draw it firmly and smoothly along the length of the prepared scraper edge (a drop of oil on the burnisher will make this action even smoother). Less than 20 pounds of force is required to form a burr; it is less than most people use with a traditional burnisher. This burnishing will raise a burr that can be barely felt with your finger; if no burr is felt, repeat as needed, but with increasing force, until a nearly imperceptible burr is formed along the entire length of the scraper. It is better to start with light force and gradually increase as needed.

Made in the USA.

Please note: it is possible to break the rod by using excessive force while turning a burr. Though carbide is very hard, it can be brittle. Large handles can also provide enough leverage to snap the rod during use. Additionally, dropping an Accu-Burr can result in breaking of the rod. This is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
