The X Series bench planes are among the most advanced planes ever released to the general public. The engineering in this series of woodworking planes that make them such an outstanding user plane is partially due to the lock nut configuration on the vertical post.

The lock nuts provide a very fine adjustment and lock the depth to that very specific position. These parts do wear out over time though and should be replaced to maintain the best performance possible.

The new version of Union lock nuts feature a tighter thread fit class to remove most of the backlash and provide a more precise adjustment. The knurled surface area is increased slightly to provide a better grip area and a sharp diamond knurl is applied giving the best possible grip.

These vertical post lock nuts are made using the same tech that was used in the original production line and honor the original design from the early 1900’s with some improvements in fit and function. They will fit your Type 1 through Type 4 X Series bench planes for sizes X No 2 through X No 8.

Each nut is hand finished and is fully warranted against manufacturing defect.

The lock nuts are sold in PAIRS and are recommended to be changed in pairs for optimal results. Note: the vertical post must be removed to replace both lock nuts on all sizes of X Planes. Take great care to protect the threads on the post during removal as to not damage them. A damaged post will cause the depth adjustment feature to no longer operate as designed. The new fit class also requires the post to be free from rust and any foreign objects on the surface.
